1st STREAMS Commencement Exercise Held

STREAMS – Pathways to Higher Education ends its academic enrichment program with a commencement exercise held on April 28, 2007 at the AVR 1, Xavier University.

26 students from selected high schools in Misamis Oriental finished the STREAMS academic enrichment program which ran from September 9, 2006 to April 14, 2007. The program which comprised 22 enrichment class sessions, 2 personality development workshops, and 2 leadership training seminars provided supplementary learning activities to the students admitted by STREAMS in the program.

Part of the ceremony was the recognition of the top 10 students including the class valedictorian and salutatorian. Special awards were also given to students who exemplified remarkable performance in Math, English, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer.

The commencement exercise was attended by parents and student volunteers of STREAMS. Mr. Ivanell R. Subrabas, STREAMS President welcomed the program’s attendees while Ms. Irene Grace A. Guitarte, Director of Student Affairs formally closed the ceremony. The commencement exercise marked the end of the second run of the STREAMS academic enrichment program. The program will resume on September this year.

STREAMS bags Three Magis Awards

STREAMS – XU Pathways bagged three major awards from the Review and Recognition Committee during the Magis Awards held on March 22, 2007 at the XU Student Center. Magis Awards are conferred to student organizations in Xavier University which exemplify Ignatian ideals of service and excellence.

Emerging as one of the outstanding student organizations in XU during the Academic Year 2006 – 2007, STREAMS received the Exemplar Award in the program-based student organization category. STREAMS ranked second in the first semester and first in the second semester in the over-all ranking of all student organizations in XU.

Bringing home the Magis Award for Community-Based Project is “STREAMS Academic Enrichment Program”, the flagship program of the organization which aims to provide educational assistance to deserving high school students in Misamis Oriental. STREAMS conducts advanced lessons in Math, English, Science, Computer and supplementary learning activities with these students and provides them with scholarship assistance.

The Magis Awards also recognized “Pagbugsay, STREAMS Volunteers’ Formation Program” for Campus-Based Project Category. “Pagbugsay” successfully strengthened the organization’s initiative in promoting involvement to the XU students by giving them monthly trainings, workshops, and lecture-seminars which dealt on education and other related issues, and thereby harnessing their skills and involvement in the community.

Named after Fr. Francis Demetrio, S.J., the two project of the year awards were conferred to STREAMS in honor of Fr. Demetrio’s passion for the preservation and development of communal traditions and culture.

Mindanao Pathways: Stepping Up on 3

February 12 – 17 marks the week long celebration of pathways as it turns 3 in Mindanao. Various activities were held daily to celebrate victories of hope, promote the good news it brings to South Cotabateños and raise more fund for the pathways tutorial program of the T’nalak youth group.

On the first day, an opening ceremony was held at the Pathways office to officially open the whole week festival. Volunteers and scholars gave testimonies to express their gratitude and share their wonderful experiences with Pathways to the NDMU admin and personnel, partner and friends who were present during that time. A mini “ salu-salo” ended the activity to symbolized the fruitful year pathways had.

Second day was jam-packed with exciting fund raising activities of the T’nalak youth Group (TYG) such as selling of gift items personally made by the volunteers themselves. Harana and Valentine Package was also a big-hit in connection with the celebration of Valentines Day. Volunteers went around the campus to serenade the special person of those who requested. An exhibit booth was also set-up to showcase the success stories of the volunteers and participants as they took part in pathways’ 3-years of operation in Mindanao particularly in South Cotabato.

On the day of Hearts, the office initiated a “Volunteers Valentines Vavad” for the volunteers as our surprise tribute for them. A “tambayan” with movie showing, lots of food and a dating game was prepared to honor the volunteers as our prime movers for the past three years. A dating game highlighted the activity wherein two of our volunteers went away with a special gift from the staff. Surprisingly, this activity invited more non-pathways volunteers and an avenue to welcome more interested volunteers in the future.

A Media Press Conference was held on the 4th day in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency Region XII (PIA-XII). Ms. Olivia Sudaria, PIA-XII Regional Director acted as the moderator during the press con. 16 members of the media coming from print, broadcast and information officers of LGUs and line agencies were present. It was a venue for pathways to promote its vision, mission and objectives, relate what we have done for the past 3 years for the youth and advocate on our cause for education development. Mindanao Pathways were represented by the staff together with the college scholar John Yrick Era and the TYG Veep for Academics Leann Jester Daus.

“Loving Still” Love is on the Air 2 pathways highlighted our week-long celebration. Local bands and performers showcased their musical prowess for a cause. The activity was a collaborative effort of the T’nalak Youth Group and Pathways Regional office. NDMU gym was filled with excited students from NDMU. They also enjoyed some surprises from our the sponsors. It was indeed a “loving still” moment as the audience fell in love with music and songs of their heart. The proceeds went to the T’nalak Youth Group fund for their future programs.

Good Job guys! Our congratulations to the workforce and supporters who made this activity a momentous event for Pathways and the T’nalak Youth Group! Keep it Up!

ADZU: " A Kit for a Kid Program"

Last December 14, 2006 - ADZU Pathways launched a kit-for-a-kid program at San Jose Gusu Elementary School, ZC. They distributed 225 kits consisting of plastic and brown envelopes, pencils, sharpeners, rulers, bond and colored papers to the 225 Grade 2 pupils.

Together with thier high school participants, ADZU Pathways youth group members experienced one of the most significant moments in thier lives. :)

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University-Pathways to Higher Education (ADZU-PATHWAYS) wished to celebrate the Christmas season in the spirit of love and generosity. In this regard, we launched two projects last December: Salu-salo na Pathways and Pathways Como Santa.

Salu-salo na Pathways was a humble gathering with the kids in the residential facility for children at Talon-talon, Zamboanga City, on December 28, 2006. Along with our volunteers, the Pathways Students joined us in the affair. We had a simple party with sixty (60) kids. On the other hand, Pathways Como Santa was a feeding activity. :Last December 23, 2006, Pathways volunteers went around the city to hand merienda to roughly sixty (60) street kids and beggars.

Both projects were funded by the school.

June 30, Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) Campus- A mini-exhibit was set up by the volunteers throughout the entire afternoon. At 4:00 pm, Urianista Pathways had its launching at the Urios College Lobby. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held, headed by Fr. John Christian Young (President of Urios College), Dr. Mary Grace Brongcano (Moderator), and Sandra Mae Bonrustro. Buds Buena and Ria Roa gave a background of Pathways and Urianista. Rhea Pajarillo presented the education situation of Butuan City. Sandra Bonrustro gave short message for the volunteers and other attendees. Maraming pumunta! At may intermission dance number pa. Ang Saya! :)

Meeting the XU "Streams"

June 28 AM – Mam Cua’s Office - We went to Mam Cua’s new office at the new building. Kamustahan lang at nameet namin some of the core group. May class ang iba tapos ung iba busy sa rummage sale, ang fund-raising activity ng youth group. Naka P1500 sila sa first 2days nila. Successful! By coincidence, dumaan ang mga bagong scholars nila. Ang Saya! Nag getting to know you kami dun. We found out that they were the former participants of XU-Pathways and are now studying at XU under different scholarships. There are 8 of them. Some are under academic excellence, others under the entrance exam scholarship (base sa results ng college entrance test) and 1 sa PATHWAYS scholarship. In fairness, gumawa sila ng bagong scholarship just for pathways. Ang bait talaga ni Fr.Jett!

The day was fine as ever. All the preparations and all the hard works of the core group is ought to be judged. We are very excited and at the same time frantic about what the outcome would be. The setting up of the venue, the gadgets to be used and the supplies were actually all set. All we need to do is to hide all the exhaustion and be ready for an inspirational smile, which is actually considered to be the greatest asset of the group.

The registration for our very joyous and spiritually awake new volunteers started at 8:00 am, at the same time it was the arrival of the two invited honorable, amiable, friendly and bubbly… drum rolls please! Ate Aya and Ate Ria! They were actually on the go to meet the new volunteers.

The orientation starts with the “getting to know each other” where all the members are all gathered around the room and locate their new found friends according to their charm-actually they were suppose to arrange the scrambled quotations. It was laughable and very loud considering the fact that all the members are a little bit of a bummer…oops! It was fun really fun!

The group names were amazing the group of Geisha’s, the Strippers, which the group explained that they will give entertainment, Team P.U.R.A which means Peace Unity Respect and Authentic, the Warriors and My Girl teams gave their own good reasons and purposes why they chose those names, and the reasons are very “nose bleeding”.

The next event is the participants’ expectations towards the seminar, facilitators, speakers and the organization. Since our assets is our smiles we made the expectation L.A.U.G.H which means Listen and learn, Acceptance & ask questions, Understanding, Give feedback and Have Fun while helping each other. Easy to remember all we need to do is LAUGH!

A Tribute to our Pathways-Mindanao Kuyas

June 6, 2006 marked the beginning of our 10-month journey with the first two Jesuit Volunteer of the Philippines (JVP) volunteers, Jayson Endaya and Emmar Benjoe Panahon assigned in Pathways to Higher Education-Mindanao Office.

They were assigned to work with Sandra Mae Bonrustro and May Amor Anne Rafanan in organizing youth groups in the different partner schools in Mindano and assisting those youth groups in planning and strategizing activities, as well as in creating linkages with institutons and individuals who will support in advancing the vision of Pathways here in Mindanao.

The youth groups they have helped include those in Xavier University, Urios College, Holy Cross of Davao College, Ateneo de Davao University, University of Immaculate Conception, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Notre Dame of Tacurong College, and Notre Dame of Marbel University.

They organized the 2nd Mindanao Convention, which was held in Cagayan de Oro City last October 2005.

They did more than just organizing the youth group. They also taught in the computer literacy program, whose module was prepared by them, and conducted tutorial program in a school in Tangtangan, South Cotabato. They have inspired us to do more and give more. They have enlightened us and shared with us the true meaning of volunteerism. They made us realize that true volunteers have cheerful hearts.

The things mentioned here are just few of their contributions to the continuing work here in Mindanao. They have helped us in so many ways and for all those things we are very grateful.

Our JVP kuyas already left to continue living their dreams for themselves and for the country. Kuya Joe left last April 3; Kuya Jay, last April 5. We wish them success in all their endeavors--they deserve to be happy they have made a lot of people happy especially the people in Mindanao whose lives they have touched.

Diverging from that serious part of this tribute here's a tribute with a lot of twists--literally--we've made for both of them. We took these pictures on the night before Kuya Jay left.

To our Kuyas, may God bless you always! We'll always remember both of you. And...you'll always be BY OUR SIDE.

Pathways Conducts Graduation Exercises

Last March 25, 2006, the Pathways Mindanao Office and the NDMU T'nalak Youth Group celebrated the end of their joint-tutorial program for SY 2005-06. Seventy three (73) participants from various municipalities all over South Cotabato graduated. The event was marked by presentations from each of the participant schools, talks by the volunteers and staff, oath-taking of newT'nalak officers, singing, and of course, picture-taking. Solvie Nubla & J Bartolome Visits Pathways Marbel

Solvie Nubla, current Pathways Director-OIC, and J Bartolome, outgoing Project officer for Community Development, visited Pathways Marbel last March 21-24, 2006. They came to meet the Marbel office regarding the general Pathways operations in Mindanao. They also oriented the office about the possibility of having a Community Development program for the local area.

A highlight of their visit was the Memorandum of Agreement signing between NDMU, represented by Bro. Crispin Betita, FMS, and Pathways to Higher Education, represented by Ms. Solvie Nubla. The event marked a strengthening of the partnership between the two organizations.

On other "news", the Marbel office (Sandra, Amor, Jay and Benjoe) accompanied the two Manileños to Lake Sebu, a famous tourist spot in South Cotabato where they went boat riding and ate lots of fresh tilapia.

NDTC PYG Shines during Student Orgs Days

Student Organizations Day is an annual celebration in Notre Dame of Tacurong College. This year, there were about 40 organizations that participated in the said activity. Pathways Youth Group (PYG) was one of the participating clubs. The SO Days was held last February 22-24, 2006.

During the awards night, PYG was adjudged second in Banner and third in Club advertisement and presentation contests. Furthermore, PYG sold foods and drinks during the said activity to generate additional funds for our Pathways programs.

The members of the group competed at the contests, particularly at the Spoof Contest, wherein almost all of the contestants were from our youth group (7 out of 9). They were adjudged first place.

Quotes for our PYG:

1.“Your banner was localized” -from one of the judges, pointing out the message of the banner and the drawing being used.

2.“Galing ng acting ninyo; I really had fun!” -from one of the audience of the spoof contest.

3.“ Wow, galing ninyo talaga, naisip ninyong magpabenta!” -from one of the officers of other organizations.

Pathways NDTC conducts school visitation

Last March 4, 2006, the Notre Dame of Tacurong College (NDTC) Pathways Youth Group brought their tutorial participants to NDTC for an exposure trip. Why did You Join Pathways?

I joined Pathways because I want to help, to serve, and to share. I love teaching, especially Mathematics-related topics. I also like the objectives of Pathways to Higher Education.

If you were given the chance to spend one full day with a person from the Convention (who's not from your school) who will it be and why?

Of course, I want to spend one full day with Ma. Christina "Kring-Kring" About, because she is nice to be with. I believe that she can share many things with me (about volunteerism and servant-leadership). We both love mathematics and she's my crush (shhhhhhhhhhh)...

Your message to all the Pathways Volunteers:

We joined Pathways because we would like to volunteer ourselves wholeheartedly and unconditionally. Let us keep the momentum that we had during our first day as volunteers - let us keep the fire burning in our hearts. Yes, some shortcomings and trials may arise, but please, fellow volunteers, let us not be weakened by those. Instead, let us consider them as challenges and thus, we need to extend extra effort to cope with those "barriers".

Always remember: we want change and improvement. We must do something to realize our dream. As I always say, God is my afflatus; He knows what's the best and what's not for us. In every project or in every move we do, let us ask His divine intervention and guidance.

Lastly, we should not be intimidated to ask advice and help from our fellows especially those whom you think are experts and able. Let us be open-minded with criticisms; these will strengthen us.

Scholar from Payatas fulfills his mother's dream

(This series of articles about young college students with the Pathways to
Higher Education program is a joint project of the Ateneo de Manila

When Rommel's mother died of a liver illness in 1995, leaving his father
to fend for the needs of the whole family, he was thrust into a world of
forced independence and adult responsibilities. He was only seven years
old then and the third in a brood of five.

Rommel and his brothers were not allowed to go to the hospital; their
mother did not want to burden them with her pain. Today, at 17, Rommel
Abundo sees that unwitnessed death as a pivotal moment in his life, one
that not only saddened him and his siblings greatly but prepared him well
for the challenges of a world, miles away from their Payatas home.

At a very young age, Rommel learned to depend on himself for many of his
needs to lighten the weight his father had to bear.

In Grade 1 while most of his peers learned only the ABCs, Rommel also
learned how to cook rice and meals for the entire family. These days he
still has his chores but he is busier with his studies at the De La Salle
University, where he is taking up a five-year course in Electronics and
Communications Engineering.

He gives credit to the valuable lessons taught to him by life and Pathways
for his fortunate entry into one of the country's best universities.

Pathways to Higher Education is an education reform program under the
Synergeia Foundation and the Ateneo de Manila University that seeks to
help public high-school students get better access to higher education
that they may one day shed light on a country darkened by weak
leaderships and bent morals. Besides tutorials in Math, English and
Science, Pathways also holds Enrichment classes for its participants to
give them the skills and attitude that will better prepare them for
college.

Dean's Lister

Thus, when Rommel entered La Salle he adjusted easily to the unfamiliar
environment, different from where he grew up. Although he admits that "at
first I was intimidated with my classmates. I thought that they might not
like me, because our financial status was different. However, I soon
earned their respect. They've grown fond of me because I'm a scholar and
we enjoy doing the same things."

This almost effortless adjustment is reflected in his becoming a Dean's
Lister in his first semester of college.

One might find this achievement surprising when he learns that besides his
academic responsibilities and daily house chores of washing and ironing
his own clothes, cooking for the family and taking care of his younger
siblings, Rommel also commutes to La Salle from their Payatas home, a
trip that usually takes about two hours and involves him taking a
tricycle, a bus and a jeepney.

"My first class is at 8 a.m. so I'm up by 5 a.m. I cook for myself, since
everyone is still asleep by then. I make sure that I am never late for
class," he said.

'The happiest moment in my life'

But Rommel is not easily overwhelmed by the swirl of responsibilities that
he must contend with as he enters adulthood. In high school he was the
president of the Supreme Student Council and at graduation time, he was
honored as the batch valedictorian. "It was the happiest moment in my
life [graduating valedictorian] because it brought honor to my family."

It has always been Rommel's goal to give back to his family, especially to
his hard-working father, who had to support the family with his plumbing
wage after his wife's death. Life became a little more difficult for the
family when three of the five children entered college. Nevertheless, as
when Rommel's mother died, the family learned to adjust and take care of
each other.

"I want to build a better house for my family, to give them financial
security," says Rommel, when asked how he hopes to repay his father's
hard labor.

Rommel also looks up to his eldest kuya for inspiration. "I want to be
like my kuya one day. I want to make our father proud. I want to be able
to help my family." Rommel's elder brother, who is in his fifth year as a
Mechanical Engineering major at the University of the Philippines in
Diliman, worked hard to get to where he is now. And Rommel is certain
that once his kuya graduates from college he will contribute greatly to
improving their family's economic situation. Rommel sees his kuya as the
epitome of hard work and independence who carries his own weight and
lightens the load of a struggling family.

'I don't want to be a burden'

What Rommel has learned from and wants for his family is reflected in his
dreams for the country and his part in that dream. "I don't want to be a
burden to the country. I want to be someone who young people can look up
to and proudly imitate. Someone with a good education whose morals are
intact and conscience clean."

Rommel is well on his way to fulfilling his dreams, thanks to Pathways and
to his advance maturity and independence that allow him to pursue and
believe in the positive changes that he can and, hopefully will, make for
his family and country.

But sometimes in the middle of all the struggles and victories, Rommel
finds himself saddened by the memory of his mother and his longing for
her presence. And yet somehow, when he sees how proud his father is of
him, he is certain that his mother, wherever she is, is beaming with joy
at his chosen path.

Pathways officially gained a home in Mindanao on February 2004. As you know, it's home in Mindanao is in Notre Dame of Marbel University, South Cotabato.
In celebration of its second year in Mindanao, the Pathways Mindanao Office along with the T'nalak Youth Group, celebrated PATHWAYS WEEK last February 12-18, 2006. Various activities were held to raise funds and awareness regarding Pathways in the Notre Dame of Marbel University. Truly, it was a joyous week for us! :)

RADIO TALK SHOW! Sunday, February 12

The Pathways Mindanao Staff, Amor, Benjoe, Jay and Sandra, with T'nalak Youth Group core member, Ariel Lalisan, went on air with Mr. D's youth oriented talk show in Radyo Agong, DXKR 639 Khz. They were able to talk about Pathways' history, advocacy, programs, as well as volunteerism in the show. Many listeners texted the DJ asking how they can help in the cause. It was definitely a cool experience!

SERENADERS is the name, HARANA-FOR-HIRE, is the game! For the special day of hearts, the youth group and the staff offered a package of Harana + a box of Cookies to students who were interested to “woo” their special someones. Nakakahiya, yes, pero patok naman! Hehe. :)

EXHIBIT! Whole Week

We want the whole NDMU to know who we are! We set-up an exhibit showing what Pathways is all about and what the T'nalak Youth Group's activities are. We also put a big map which showed ALL the Pathways youth groups in the Philippines!

TAMBAYAN! Whole Week

The staff and volunteers set-up the Pathways office as a cozy tambayan for one week. Then they had a schedule of films to be shown each day! Of course, since it was Valentines week, the films were about love. Even non-Pathways volunteers came to “make tambay”! :)

Cookies, crinkles, and macaroons were the new chocolates this Valentines season. These goodies became Pathways' Valentines offering to volunteers and other NDMU students. It was very popular, especially the one with “Harana”! :p

PATHWAYS CONCERT! Thursday, February 16

“Diri na kamo date” (Dito na kayo mag-Date) -- that is one of the tag-lines in our posters for Pathways' post-Valentines fundraising Variety Concert. It was entitled “Love is in the Air”, and truly, Love was in the air as NDMU bands and performers sang love songs, and danced to groovy music.

Mother takes quiet pride in daughters’ achievements

The relationship between a mother and her daughter is never quite what it seems. Mothers tend to be especially hard on their daughters because, once, they too were strictly disciplined by their own mothers. Conversely, mothers are also proudest of their little girls’ growth into womanhood because it reflects their good mothering skills.

But not all mothers take it to the extreme. For Pathways scholar Christine Mogarte, her mother Elenita was never one to raise a hand against her or take away credit for her own achievements as a scholar.

In fact, Elenita does not take credit at all. She has two other girls who happen to be scholars too.
The eldest, 20-year-old Cherubim, a consistent scholar at UST, recently graduated. She now works for an advertising firm in Ortigas Center. Second child Christianne is a third-year computer science scholar at UP Diliman. Christine, 18, easily the shyest of the four, is a freshman and full scholar at the Ateneo de Manila University. The youngest, Clarence, will graduate from Marikina High School this year and hopefully enter UP.

Including their father Efraim, all six members of the Mogarte family live in a tight compound in Marikina City’s Concepcion subdivision. Though their house is small and humble, it is cozy.
Elenita wakes up the earliest to prepare breakfast and Efraim gets his tricycle ready for the day. Though life for the Mogarte family seems simple and pleasant enough, it was not always so.

Those were the days

The Mogartes lived a more comfortable life once. Christine’s father was an accountant for a Makati firm. He and Elenita could afford to send their three daughters at the time to St. Scholastica’s Marikina, an exclusive school for girls.

In 2000 the company downsized and Efraim lost his job. Christine and her sisters had to transfer from St. Scholastica’s to Marikina High School, one of the city’s seven public high schools.

“Mahirap. Hard,” Christine describes the transition from an exclusive private school to a public one.

“Di ko ma-imagine kung ano ang gagawin ko doon [I couldn’t imagine what I was supposed to do]. Dati, mababa ang tingin ko kasi sa public school. I had a low opinion then of public schools],” she adds.

This petite girl found Marikina High chaotic and frightening. Most of the students, she recalls, did not study hard. They were not motivated to do so. Freshman year was an ordeal.
Life had become equally challenging for Elenita. “Ang hirap budgetin! [It was difficult to budget],” she says when asked how she managed to send four girls to school despite the family’s greatly reduced income.

Efraim used up all his savings to buy a secondhand tricycle, which he hoped would take care of their family’s needs. But he was not granted the required franchise to operate it, so he had to resort to being a kolorum (unlicensed) driver. Whenever he was arrested, he had to shell out a big bite of the family money to pay for the ticket.

Keeping afloat

Both father and mother were determined not to have their children’s studies uninterrupted. They resorted to the 5/6 money lenders and paid 20 percent a day to the loan sharks. It was the only thing they could do to keep Cherubim, Christianne, Christine and Clarence in school.
Christine recalls how sometimes her mother would tell her in the morning, “Anak, pasyensya ka na, walang baon ngayon. [Child, bear up patiently, there’s no pocket money for you today].”
Even at such a young age, Christine was well aware of the family’s financial hardship. “Alam ko na mahirap na kami. [Kasi] dati linggo-linggo kami umaalis, lumalabas para manood ng sine o mag-shopping nung may trabaho pa si ’tay. [I knew we had become poor. Before, when father had his job, we went out every week, went to see movies].” That was a luxury they could no longer afford.

Another problem was Christine’s frail health as a teen. She had recurring asthma attacks, which required frequent visits to the nearby hospital and added to the monthly expenses. The cost of just one checkup called for sacrificing on other household items to spend on.

Yet, looking back, Elenita still manages to find humor in their situation. “Kung may pa-raffle ang Saint Vincent’s Hospital, baka kami ang nanalo kasi madalas kami doon! [If Saint Vincent’s Hospital had a raffle we would have surely won because we were there so often].”

The silver lining

Indeed, they saw the silver lining in every dark cloud. Christine says that her frequent hospital visits prompted her to take up B.S. Biology, so she could become a doctor. Besides the obvious need to earn a decent living, Christine also resolved to help other sickly people like her.
Her mother doesn’t object to this lofty goal. But what she wants is for Christine to find work abroad.

“Gusto ko para sa kanya mag-abroad! [I wish for her to go abroad],” she exclaims as she smiles at her daughter. “Kung puwede sana mag-nurse siya para mas madaling makapag-abroad. [If it were possible, she should be a nurse and go abroad faster],” to which Christine quietly shakes her head in disapproval.

Right now, going abroad is farthest from her mind. She prefers to be of help to others here where help is most needed. Not only that; she also knows she will be terribly homesick in a foreign country. Elenita shrugs that off and tells Christine, “Ngayong lang ’yan kasi bata ka pa. [You only feel that way now because you’re still young].”

Philosophy of parenthood

Mothers do always seem to know best. In this case, Elenita made it a point to do what was right for her children. Yet her philosophy on parenting is quite simple: give them a good foundation and they will do the rest. How did she do it?

She made sure that each of the girls came home right after school and had them studying together, doing their homework or learning advanced things from her as their tutor.
“After mag-aral sila, lalabas kami para maglaro. Papasok kami sa bahay ng 7 para manood ng balita at kumain. Uuwi ’yung asawa ko at manonood kami lahat ng TV. Pero pag-linggo, maglalaro kami. [After the lesson, we went out to the yard to play games, do sports. We reentered the house at 7 p.m. to watch the news and eat supper. My husband would arrive home and we all watched TV. But on Sundays we all played sports together].”

Elenita says she got this belief in instilling proper values and discipline into her children at a young age from her own mother. Besides this, Elenita is also active in her Pathways mutual support group, whose members are parents of scholars like her. They have banded together under a livelihood program of making chocolate lollipops, which they sell for extra income.

The daily regimen set by her mother has made a deep impression on Christine and her siblings. It is the one habit she keeps until this day; though this doesn’t exempt her from staying up late at night reviewing for exams. In their kitchen, which doubles as a small driveway, Efraim has even set up a special light for Christine to study by at night. It is her favorite spot.

More than just high grades

Being a Pathways scholar, Christine knows she has to work hard to maintain her grades especially because her course at the Ateneo isn’t easy. But she also knows that a Pathways scholar’s success consists of more than just high grades. It also requires the participant to be well rounded, confident and capable of leading others.

Christine has learned a lot from the workshops she has attended and from chats with her fellow scholars from the colleges. She meets these friends once a month. Among her peers, she is affectionately called “bata” for her diminutive stature; but is also known for the calm and mature words of advice she gives to friends who need encouragement.

Asked what Elenita’s advice would be to mothers like her, Christine pauses a moment to think. Obviously she doesn’t crow about her parenting skills. After careful thought she says confidently, “Habang maliit pa ang mga anak nila, mag-set na sila ng goals [para sa kanila]. Pagdating mula sa school ang anak, turuan na, tapos may konting laro. Bata pa sila, makakasanayan na nila. At [paglaki nila] kanya-kanyang diskarte na ’yan. [While their children are still small, mothers should set goals for them. When the children arrive home from school, begin teaching them and then have a bit of playtime with them. They get used to this schedule. And when they grow up, they will each go their different ways].” But they would have been formed with a solid disciplinary foundation.

Mother-daughter bonding

Christine looks at her mother, satisfied with the response given. It is hard to get an equally expressive answer from her, as she usually dismisses the more probing questions with, “Ewan ko.” Some have mistaken this for childish aloofness, and doubt her abilities because she does look like a child. Her height and childlike looks have nothing to do with who she really is. Her friends say most of the time she hides her inner greatness from view.

Her mother, however, once again makes light of the whole thing with the joke, “Maybe she is hiding her crushes from us.”

This makes Christine pout and giggle at the same time. Making her look more childlike and this mother-daughter bonding a beautiful sight to behold.

Why did You Join Pathways?
When I was younger, I dreamt to be a teacher perhaps due to the influence of my eldest sister who was then a teacher ( now I took accountancy partly also because of my elder sister, next to me, who's an Accounting graduate..hehe.. sundog-sundog!) I just have this fulfilling emotion whenever i get to be in front of people younger than me, when i get to impart what i have in any ways. I've experienced to be a teacher, though just in a short time, with grade 1 students from a public elementary school here in our locality. I loved the way they get to listen with enthusiasm. Thus, teaching is really my first love( and first love never dies?=D).

If you were given the chance to spend one full day with a person from the Convention (who's not from your school) who will it be and why?
It'll be Ate Ira. I wanna know what it takes to be "SWEET" .=D.. Serious, i have this former (yes, former) friend whom i can see in her . We did have good times together and I was like her little sister. It's just that, I miss her although we separated with a conflict.

Your message to all the Pathways Volunteers:
Hi fellow path makers! With my current state, I am certain that I still haven't given justice to my commitment as a pathways volunteer. I confess that sometimes, i feel so tired to get all things done in such a short span of time considering the other matters i need to work with. Maybe, you also feel the same way too. But what drives me through amid all of the odds and uncertainties is my vision of the future, my future children. Of course, i want them enrolled in a school which can give them the quality of education they deserve to have.

It is so important that we share a common vision (as what we've learned from our Team Building Seminar). Vision is very powerful. So whenever we get our bodies tired, let's all be inspired of one common goal, to help every Filipino gain access to quality higher education through our own simple ways as a volunteer. Let this be our advocacy, because whenever we teach, " we touch the future."

VOLUNTEERS FOR PROGRESS This series of articles about young college students with the Pathways to Higher Education program is a joint project of the Ateneo de Manila University and The Manila Times.

ROSALYN PUIG is a sophomore at Notre Dame of Marbel University who was given a chance by Pathways to pursue her college education.

She is one of the many students in Libertad National High School, Suralah, South Cotabato, who joined the first batch of participants when Pathways to Higher Education Program started in Mindanao in February 2004. Pathways-Mindanao conducts Summer Bridging Classes in English, math and computer literacy to help public high-school students enter college.

Pathways to Higher Education in South Cotabato helped Rosalyn to be part of the Grant-in-Aid Working Student (GIA/WS) Program of Notre Dame of Marbel University.

The program provides for the tuition and miscellaneous fees of the students. At the same time the students are assigned clerical work where they get paid P17 per hour.

“I wouldn’t have been able to go to college if not for Pathways and the GIA/WS program, because my family couldn’t afford to pay for my studies,” Rosalyn said in Pilipino. She recalled the times when she had to walk to school so she could save her baon for school expenses.

Pathways to Higher Education was established in April 2002 as a new educational development program of the Ateneo de Manila University and has regional offices all over the Philippines. Pathways can be found in Bulacan, Baguio, Iloilo and South Cotabato through Notre Dame of Marbel University. It employs a comprehensive response to the problem faced by academically gifted but poor youths to enter and finish college. More than just being a scholarship program, Pathways aims to equip students with the skills and competence to make it to college through Weekly Academic Enrichment Classes, Self-Enhancement Workshops.

Rosalyn says Pathways allowed her to dream and fulfill her plans for her siblings to go to school. For her, a college degree is an important ingredient for success.

She dreams of eventually managing a company, which is why she took up Management Accounting. She works hard to balance her studies and work, and despite her tiring schedule she still manages to get high grades and maintain her “scholarship” from the GIA/WS program. Recently, she was promoted to student assistant at the university’s Business Office.

“If it were not for Pathways, I would not have been in college now. Pathways helped me develop confidence in myself and in interacting with the people I meet in school,” Rosalyn says.

T'nalak Conducts Educ Tour!

Last Saturday, January 28, the T'nalak Pathways Youth Group of NDMU, along with the Pathways Mindanao Office, conducted a whole-day Educational Field Trip for their participants. Its objective was to let them have fun outside the classroom and at the same time expose the kids to the various industries available in the region. The tour was done in General Santos City and included a trip to the city Airport, the Makar Sea Port, the Notre Dame of Dadiangas Museum, and the Beach!

Student explores the world a step at a time

TALL and willowy, Maureen de los Reyes seems no different than any otherthird-year college student. However, her dreamer's eyes and quietstrength have carried her far.

Maureen's family has never been well-off, and her father's unfortunateaccident in her second grade worsened its situation. Her father was leftparalyzed and forced to move back to his hometown of Batangas. Without income from the family's lone breadwinner and her mother's pregnancy,rough times became rougher.
"Sobrang gipit na gipit talaga," says Maureen of her situation. Hereducation painstakingly continued but had to be subsidized by her lola'smeager income.

New beginnings

On her third year she entered the Pathways to Higher Education programoffered in her Payatas school. The way forward opened up but it wasn'teasy.

Maureen says that of the 50 original participants, only 9 remained.

Pathways to Higher Education is an innovative education program at theAteneo de Manila University that aims to help send academically-giftedbut marginalized public high-school students to college. Instead of dolesand scholarships, Pathways offers these students academic enrichmentclasses, supplementary learning and learning resource centers to enablethem to study well and earn scholarships to the schools and courses oftheir choice.

Tutorials and homework in English, Science and Math were offered everySaturday and Sunday apart from her regular schoolwork. By supplementingthe students' education, Pathways equipped its participants to increasetheir competencies---and so it did for Maureen. "Gustong gusto kongmag-aral pa at ayaw kong tumigil."

By her fourth year, Pathways once again helped Maureen apply for collegeat no cost. She was able to apply to the college of her choosing and,soon after, entered BS Tourism in Centro Escolar University. She happilyreports in Pilipino, "I thought that maybe, someday I would be able tocontinue studying in college, but never did I think I'd get to study in aschool like CEU."

College life

Grateful to have entered CEU, Maureen still acknowledges that life isstill lined with challenges. She constantly has to watch her expenses,saving up for the costly school trips her course requires her to attend. She notes, "Ang hirap minsan sa school, madali nilang makalimutan nahindi lahat mayaman."

She proudly recounts one trip to Corregidor she attended. "Pinag-ipunanko talaga 'yun!" She talked to the tourism head in advance, asking howmuch the trip cost at the start of their semester and, by saving herallowances for the rest of the semester, she was able to pay the P1,200fee.

Once there, she made sure not to waste a single moment on her trip.

"Ako ang unang-unang taong nag-eenjoy. Naglalakad-lakad ako kahit walangkasama...Nilulubos-lubos ko talaga." While others lie down in surrender,Maureen continues to wander around and explore. Having no camera of herown, she scrupulously borrows and recopies pictures from her classmates'cameras.

Her words to others like her? Just three things, "Hindi hadlang angkahirapan, patuloy kang maniwala na may Diyos at lakasan lang ang iyongloob sa harap ng mga pag-subok."

Maureen's journey has never been easy, because it is the path that fewhave taken. It has taken her great courage and determination. But it isnot an impossible journey. Where once there was no road, she and otherPathways scholars like her are starting to lead the way for others tofollow.

As the Chinese philosopher Lin Yutang once said, "Hope is like a road inthe country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, theroad comes into existence."

Never get discouraged when you think you that your working all alone for something big, and that many people don't really care of the outcome, of whether this work would turn out to be a success or a failure, what matters is that YOU CARE! And that you know that you would always do your best to make the outcome of your work a SUCCESS.

What others think does matter, but what you believe in matters even more. Don't let anyone hinder you from doing what you want, just do it just as long as you know what you're doing and just as long as as you know that you are something right. People may say that many individuals have done what you are still trying to do, but remember that you can do things that those individuals can never ever duplicate. Scholar sees teleportation being put to practical use*

If she could have it her way, Christel Ann Fitero would be transportingpeople to different places in a snap---literally. For this Electronics andCommunications Engineering sophomore, teleportation may soon be more thanjust a figment of our collective imagination.

"[Teleportation] will deliver people to different places [in] an instant,"Christel's eyes sparkle and her lips curl into an almost naughty grin asshe imagines the possibilities. "It will definitely [lessen] the trafficjams we have in our country, and it will assure us of our safety and maketraveling a lot easier and less time-consuming."
"We live in a world na mabilisan [fast-paced].

We want everything in an instant; teleportation can be our aid to that."

A fan of the Matrix trilogy, this 18-year-old gets tickled at the thoughtthat anything is possible. She admits that although she has yet to stumbleupon a solid basis for teleportation, whatever she has read on QuantumPhysics so far is leading her to believe that this kind oftechnology---as mystical and as supernatural as it may seem---is feasiblescientifically.

*Anything is possible *

Christel herself has proved that dreams can come true, and thatdetermination, perseverance---and imagination---can take us to placeswe've only imagined before. Although she has already had the inclinationfor Math and for "stuff na medyo mabutingting" (stuff that requiresmeticulous handiwork), she never really thought that she would make it toone of the toughest courses at the Ateneo de Manila University---and as ascholar at that.

Besides the science-loving genes that she seems to have inherited from herfamily (her elder siblings, Adelaide and Lloyd Frances, graduated fromcomputer courses, and her youngest brother, Kenneth Carlo, is a nursingfreshman), Christel credits her experience with Pathways to HigherEducation as the key that unlocked a world of possibilities for her.

Pathways to Higher Education is an education development program,established at the Ateneo de Manila University in 2002, that equipsstudents with the skills and the competence they would need to get a goodcollege education.

About her Pathways experience, Christel shares: "I've learned how toappreciate life even more because I saw that somehow [I was] fortunateenough to be able to study at Ateneo . . . Pathways has been the door forme to enter Ateneo, giving my family fewer expenses since I am a scholar. . .I really am thankful for all the blessings that God has given me."

*A simple smile is all it takes *

As lofty as her scientific goals may be, Christel keeps her feet on theground. Amid all the glitz and gadgetry of the high-tech world, what sheloves best are simple joys.
"Mababaw lang [ang] kaligayahan ko. Anything [that's funny] can make melaugh. More often than not, I'm always accused of being corny. I laugh atthe corniest jokes," she admits.
Christel's involvement with Pathways allows her to do just that. Besidesbeing a scholar, she also helps other students cope with the rigors ofacademic life by giving Math tutorials.

*Not just "world peace" *

While she has the frame and the demeanor to be crowned "MissCongeniality," Christel won't just tell you that she wishes for "worldpeace."

"[My greatest dream for myself is to] be able to touch someone's life andcreate a change, even if it is not as great as world peace," she chucklesnaughtily.

"For my family, I just wish that they will always be happy and content;[that they will] continue learning how to truly love and forgive so thatthey will be able to accept themselves and others as well.

Her dream for mankind? "I wish it the knowledge that will guide it throughits voyage toward innovations."

Pathways Celebrates "Puno ng Pag-Asa"

Pathways-South Cotabato office and the NDMU T'nalak Youth Group, in cooperation with the NDMU University Library, are celebrating a project dubbed as “Puno ng Pag-asa”. This activity is a fund- and awareness-raising project of the Pathways Mindanao Office and the NDMU youth group. Its name symbolizes two things: puno (tree/life) and puno (filled). The project hopes to convey this Yuletide Season that we should give life to and fill with hope the public high school youth which Pathways tries to help.

Anyone may buy a Christmas ornament (star) for P50.00 each. It will be hung on the Christmas tree and will be tagged with their name and Christmas messages/wishes. An angel figurine will be given to our donor as a token of our gratitude. Beside the Christmas tree is a small exhibit which shows a brief description of our Pathways Tutorial program and what "Puno ng Pag-asa" is all about.

Teen conquers polio on her way to college

CORAZON Octubre, 18, thought she could sit through her gymnastics class for the entire semester. After all, she consoled herself as she entered the gym, the instructor will probably understand her condition once she sees her. To Cora's surprise, however, the instructor refused to give an exemption. Thus, for an entire semester, Cora performed all the routines and exercises required. She marched back and forth, completed the foot and leg exercises and balanced on poles—all of these despite polio.

Cora was just about a year old when she got sick with polio. Dealing with her physical condition was never easy. Taking gymnastics for Physical Education was an even greater challenge. "There was a time when I thought of dropping the class instead," she said in Pilipino. But with great courage, she decided otherwise and finished the course despite her difficulties. "I completed all the requirements and even got a high grade. I could do it after all," she beamed.
It is with this same courage that Cora faced other challenges in life. "I came from a public school," she recalled.

"There was always a lack of books, materials and facilities. I experienced sharing one book with four fellow students. There were also times when we learned our lessons by the stairway. Then everytime someone would pass by, our class would be interrupted." Yet, despite all these, Cora was consistently at the top of her class and won an award for journalism. However, despite her academic excellence, financial difficulties in the family were making it impossible for her to go to college.

It was from a teacher in her high school that Cora learned about Pathways. In her senior year, her teacher encouraged her, along with the rest of the top 10 students of her class, to join the Pathways to Higher Education Program. Pathways is a scholarship program that helps bright but financially underprivileged public high-school students enter college by focusing on their academic and nonacademic formation. Pathways aims not only to provide financial support to these participants but to assist them as well in the major difficulties they face in pursuing a college education.

Today, through the help of Pathways, Cora is an Education Major at the Philippine Normal University, taking a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She chose to take up Education because she believes that it is through teaching that she can help in the development of our country.
"A teacher has the capacity to influence the lives of the students in her class. If you are a good teacher, you will become an inspiration to them. You can set a good example that they can follow. If they follow your example and become good, they will become productive. If they are productive, our country will see progress."

Like many young Filipinos, Cora has many hopes and dreams for the future. She dreams of graduating with honors, of getting a good job as a teacher, of helping her family. But perhaps unlike many, Cora also dreams of something bigger.
"I hope to take part in changing the course of the educational system in our country. I dream of helping others, of helping my country, and of having the opportunity to repay those who helped me."

AdZU Pathways

The staff sends its warmest congratulations to the Pathways Youth Group of Ateneo de Zamboanga! They have successfully ended their Camino project and are about to embark on a new program which they are calling Adopt-A-School project. Furthermore, the outgoing seniors have already recruited new passionate volunteers to continue their group's cause. Congrats AdZU! The staff hopes that the passion for service will never fade in your hearts.

Benjoe and Jay were there last December 1-6 to evaluate their Pathways Small Grants—Winning project entitled Camino: A Push for Quality Education, as well as to give a Formation and Planning Seminar for their group. They were able to talk to four of AdZU Pathways' participants and heard many good comments about their tutorial program.

Payatas girl beats the odds to get a college education

Circumstances seem to have a way of pitting themselves against Glaysa Solasco of Payatas, Quezon City. Her father's medical condition, compounded by the country's lean times, led to her transfer from a private to a public school during her early grade-school years.

Though she consistently got high grades, coming from a family of five siblings and female didn't give her much hope that she would even begin college. "Na-i-imagine ko na, na katulong ako, dahil marami sa mga kapit-bahay ko ganoon, o kaya nag-asawa na siguro ako nang maaga. Pero ang dami ko pang mga pangarap," she says.

Fate, however, had something else in store for this assertive and outspoken girl. "Hindi ako mag-g-give up basta-basta, kahit parang mahirap," says Glaysa. Through her determination and her participation in the Pathways program, it seems that she doesn't have to give up any of her dreams after all.

Participating in the Pathways program not only gave Glaysa the means to study BA Communications in UP Baguio but also helped her gain the confidence and the skills she needed to take the entrance exam. "It's a good thing that Pathways has tutorials," she says in Taglish, "because our high-school curriculum isn't really enough preparation for many of the questions. And if we did pass, it would be hard to stay on."

Perhaps because of this realization, she decided to remain active in the Pathways Youth Group even after high school. She, along with other Pathways scholars, is able to give back to the community by tutoring other underprivileged high-school students. "Since we can't give things like books, at least we can help the community by sharing our knowledge," she explains.

This principle of giving back is evident even in Glaysa's dream of becoming a broadcast journalist. Someday, through her influence and her connections, she wants to open doors for more children like her.

Despite the difficult times it has been facing, her family is quite understandably happy and proud of her. With deeply felt emotions, Glaysa relates how happy her father is for her because he believes it's something that "kahit anong hirap ang gawin niya, hindi niya kayang ibigay."

Her mother is pleased that, besides being scholars, Pathways students like her daughter know how to share what they've received. Her kuya can't help being happy for Glaysa too, because he sees that "'yung mga bagay na hindi sana niya makukuha, nakuha pa rin niya."

Though Glaysa had passed the entrance exams, she still had to deal with many other obstacles. Being so far away from her family brought about a period of homesickness that almost made her want to quit. Expensive projects had her skipping lunch for as long as it took to save up the money required. Mixed classes with upper classmen had her burning the midnight oil in order to understand what was being taught. The return of her father's medical condition keeps her worrying about her family and their future.

But even with all these challenges, Glaysa still looks toward the horizon with bright eyes and an infectious smile. How she can still do that, one can only wonder. Perhaps it's because of her belief that "to answer an opportunity that's knocking is one thing, but to hold that opportunity is another. Hindi dapat mag-give up dahil lang feeling mo agad na mahirap o tedious 'yung process."

From the looks of things, Glaysa is determined to cling fast to this opportunity and soar with it to reach even greater heights.

Congratulations AdDU!

November 30, 2005-the Ateneo de Davao University-PAthways Youth group had its "soft" Launching Program by presenting the education situation especially that of Mindanao to 50+ SocSci and Educ Students.

During the talk , the students had been very responsive and that they had shown iterest in helping out answer some of the educational setbacks. It is very inspiring to note, that they had acknowledged the privileges endowed to them and that they are spirited to pay forward. The common response I'd heard from the students (aside from their constant sad sighs and tsk!tsk!) was an inquiry of how to be of help.

The activity had somehow paved for an outset partnership among Pathways-AdDU, the group of Education students and Social Sciences students (I forgot the official name of the two groups, my apologies). Aside from that, the AdDU team had the chance to really sellout not just the cause of PAthways but the advocacy materials as well.

Ooppss... I would definitely not forget the efforts of "Papa Bear" (hope you guys still remember him-Jan Michael Gacer). Sobrang busy ni papa bear noong araw na ito, he was the one who organized the activity with of course the help and presence of the other charming AdDu core members ( Ate Marian, Fazl, Fran, Delbrynth, menchi, handsome jason...sana lahat na mention ko...basta you know kung sino kayo...)

Hint to other youth group: If you are still in the process of recruiting members, I suggest you follow what AdDU had done. Presenting the depressing situation of Education in Mindanao can easily "punch" the preconcious, subconcious, super ego, id (o kung anuman ang tamang terminlohiya, pasok din ang Konsensiya, persona at ethika...honestly dont know the right term:)

Benjoe's Trip

Hey Guys! Whew! It's my first time to blog! So here goes,

My trip to Davao last Saturday was very successful indeed (with the British accent!). The 4-hour bus ride from Marbel was well worth it. I was able to meet members of the two youth groups there - HCDC and AdDU.

At about 9AM, I meet Emyat, Al, Bart, Ralph and SV inside the Holy Cross campus. Yup, we were able to talk about a lot of things, specifically about their accreditation. Also, I was like a salesman "in-the-zone" selling Educ8 merchandise to them! I was able to trick them into buying 700 pesos worth of goodies from me! Hahahaha, joke lang! The money will be used for Pathways purposes naman, so don't fret (again, with the British accent!).

At 12 noon, I meet Marian and Jason at AdDU (dapat lilibre ko sila ng lunch pero konti lang dumating, tsk tsk... hehe). We talked about plans for the January "immersion visit" and we agreed to have it on the second week of January (so dun sa mga hindi pa nakakapag-pa-schedule, magpa-schedule na kayo! :D). They were also very enthusiastic about the Educ8 gears! Syempre dahil ang gaganda ng mga merchandise! Di ba?! Hehe...

What made the trip most enjoyable was the wide array of beautiful ladies in Davao! Grabe jud! Kahit saan ka tumingin! Oops... Huwag nyo ko isusumbong ha, baka matanggal ako sa JVP! Hahaha...

Anyway, we hope to visit more youth groups before the end of the year. We'll be going to Zamboanga tomorrow and I think Buds is also inviting us to go to Butuan on the 19th of December!

Woohoo! Travel! I love my work! I love Pathways! Miss you all!

3rd Batch of Public High School Students Graduates from Pathways NDMU's CLP

Last Saturday, November 19, 2005, marked the "graduation day" for the third batch of public high school participants in Pathways NDMU's Computer Literacy Program. This batch was composed of senior high school students from Tantangan National Trade High School in Tantangan, South Cotabato. (The two batches who graduated before them were senior students from Tantangan National High School and Bukay-Pait National High School.)

This batch's "Valedictorian" is none other than Jenilyn Llorca, who was able to attend all the 5 halfday sessions of the program, garner the highest scores in the evaluation quizzes and show the most promising skill in learning the document, spreadsheet, and presentation programs of StarOffice. In the "intermission" part of our small commencement exercises, Jenilyn sang Sarah Geronimo's "Forever's Not Enough" as thanks to Pathways NDMU's volunteer-tutors.

Pathways NDMU's Computer Literacy Program is possible through the generous support of Congressman Arthur "Dodo" Pingoy, Jr. (Representative of the 2nd district of So.Cot.), Rotary Club of Koronadal, the Department of Education-So.Cot. Division, and the Notre Dame of Marbel University.

Banga LGU Aids Pathways NDMU!

Yesterday, Pathways NDMU received P15,000.00 from the Banga Municipal Government as aid to the 15 students from the Banga National High School who currently participate in the Pathways NDMU tutorials. The given amount will be used to cover the students' transportation expenses (from Banga to Marbel) through out the program period (June 2005 to March 2006).

Last year, Pathways has already collaborated with the Banga LGU for their first tutoring program. The Pathways Mindanao staff is very proud to acknowledge that the partnership between the Banga LGU and their office is going strong.

School Fest featuring BAMBOO in CDO!

December is fast approaching, and so is the Xavier University Festival Days. As a part of its Opening Program, A Skul Fest featuring Bamboo will be held on November 30, 2005, at the Xavier University Gymnasium. This is in collaboration with the XU Pathways, XU Central Student Government and the Corpus Christi Alumni Association '95. It is an activity wherein different bands within Cagayan de Oro will perform to welcome the coming of the Xavier Days.

Here comes the best part about it....

Proceeds of this "Mini-concert" will go to the XU Pathways!

This will help us a lot in our future activities. May this be a big step for us to contribute to making pathways for a better Mindanao.

Kagawad Balili Helps Pathways NDMU

Honorable Teresita Balili, a Municipal Councilor of Polomolok, South Cotabato, and head of its Education committee, is a supporter of the initiatives of Pathways Mindanao in helping poor but deserving public high school students gain access to quality higher education. The Staff would like to thank her for accompanying them yesterday in visiting the eight (8) national high schools in Polomolok ang acquainting them with the Principals and Officers-in-charge of these institutions.

Why did You Join Pathways?

To be really honest, I am here at Pathways because my friends are also here. They are the ones who have influenced me a lot. Aside from my friends, I joined because I wanted to be part of Pathways' quest to help academically gifted but underprivileged students gain access to quality higher education. I am one of the people who have been enlightened by Pathways' mission and vision.

I also joined Pathways for personal reasons. From the start, I know that Pathways will develop me into a more responsible and better individual. It will teach me lessons that I will never never learn in a classroom. I thought that joining will make me know myself better, explore and discover what I really want to do and happen in my life. Since I am a student-teacher, I am hoping that along the way I may be able to realize if teaching is for me or not.

If you were given the chance to spend one full day with a person from the Convention (who's not from your school) who will it be and why?

I think it would be Ate Buds (Urios College). We were not close during the convention (we were not able to talk to each other), but I would choose her because I think I can get along with her. During the convention, I found her nice, honest and true. And with her, I think I can just be myself. Another reason is that I have seen in her the sincerity to help and the willingness to serve. I aslo admire her leadership in pursuing the program.

Your message to all the Pathways Volunteers:

Being a Pathways Volunteer is not easy, I know. It involves much time, effort, money and a lot of sacrifices. But despite all of these, I hope that we should still continue to serve. We should not give up. We should always bear in mind that we are not just doing this for ourselves but also for the future of our children and our children's children. Even in our own little and simple way, we can make a change for the better. The power is in us.

PMA wannabe blazes new path to fulfill her dreams

Rheina Lapeña, 17, remembers applying at the Philippine MilitaryAcademy when she was younger. "They turned me down because they said I wasn't tall enough."

Instead of backing down, like others whose spirits aren't as indomitable, Rheina took on the challenge. "Challenges are merely instruments for us to become better and stronger persons.

They are part of our lives and I'm very proud that I am able to hurdle all those challenges," Rheina says.
A sophomore at the University of the Philippines-Baguio and one of theTen Outstandingg Youth of Baguio awardees, Rheina still hurdles challenges every step of the way. "When I was a freshman, I had to sell beauty products just to add to my allowance because my academic scholarship was not enough to pay for my other expenses---like for materials used in projects."

She is one of six children, all of them scholars in Baguio universities. This makes her resolute to exceed other people's expectations of her, including her own. But this Ulirang Kabataan of the Philippines and PGMA leadership and Academic Excellence Awardee is an orderly person. She wants to tackle her aspirations one step at a time.

Rheina admits, though, that it's difficult to manage her time very well, always being torn between school and her extracurricular activities. "Being a college student is not an easy thing. I've been meeting a lot of challenges along the way: busy schedule, challenging schoolwork, high expectations from other people, gossip, family problems. Thanks to Pathways I have become somewhat wiser in life's give and take. I have become more aware of the needs of people in my surroundings and I always strive to find ways of contributing to our community."

Pathways to Higher Education is an innovative education program of Ateneo de Manila University that aims to help send academically-giftedbut marginalized public high-school students to enter college and take the courses of their choice. Instead of giving doles and scholarships, Pathways offers impoverished high-school students academic enrichment classes, supplementary learning activities and learning resource centers. These enable them to study well and earn scholarships.

Rheina is only one of the many students who have gone to college through this program. She is a Political Science major.

"I love inspiring and advising people. That's why I said to myself, perhaps I could inspire more people, share with them what I learned--and felt---in all the struggles I have encountered and ask them for their prayers so I can hurdle the other challenges I will surely face whenI graduatee," Rheina says.

"I dream of becoming an instructor some day, hopefully at PMA, to inspire the cadets to help and serve the people," she adds, revealing that through all her hardships, she has not lost sight of her goal to serve the country.

"I believe that if each Filipino develops the spirit of unity and volunteerism, our society will find it easy to achieve the success and progress we are wishing for," says Rheina.

After her undergraduate study, Rheina wants to enroll in law school. In the meantime, she enjoys her scholarship at UP-Baguio as well as being a public servant as a chair of Samahang Kabataan.

She says: "Someday I want to establish a foundation that would help less fortunate students to pursue their college education. I would love to be a Pathways sponsor."

She realizes that it is not only her dream but the dreams of other people around her and the people she will be serving in the future that are at stake. Consequently, Rheina keeps telling herself that "nothing is impossible if we do our best and if we are really determined to reachour goals."

Hello Pathways Mindanao Volunteers :D

Kumusta naman kayo? It has been around 2 weeks since huling nagkita-kita tayo sa Cagayan de Oro! Nakakamiss kayo :) Sana naman nakapagpahinga kayo sa sembreak, at sana din naging okay ang inyong holloween. Kami rin sa staff, we had a well-deserved break.

Anyhow, nagsimula na (sa iba, magsisimula na) ang SECOND SEM! woohoo! For the seniors, this is your last stretch (senti na siguro kayo). So, balik eskwela na tayo! Which means, sana, balik-Pathways na din! YES! Go PATHWAYS! :D

Oras na para pagulungin ang ating mga napagplanuhan! Oras na para simulan ang ating mga activities para sa kanila: silang mga public high school students na gusto nating tulungang makarating ng kolehiyo. Pathways to Higher Education
Mindanao Volunteers Convention
Unleashing the Power of the Mindanao Youth!

October 24-26, 2006

The Mindanao Volunteers Convention went very well! We had 63 participants and 4 moderators all coming from the various Pathways Youth Groups here in Mindanao. The kids were very enthusiastic at magagaling... they include the core members of Ateneo de Davao University, Notre Dame of Marbel University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Holy Cross of Davao College, Notre Dame of Tacurong College, Urios College of Butuan, and Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan).

Nagsimula ang programa (7:00pm) sa isang Getting-to-Know-You activity kung saan ang mga volunteers ay pumili ng object that could closely describe them. Pagkatapos magpakilala ang bawat isa, the participants were asked to put their name tags in the center, facing down. At dito nagsisimula ang memory game... One had to guess who owned the tag he/she had picked and give it to its correct owner... Ang nagkamali, may consequence! Pinoy Ako dance! And then nagkaroon din ng expectation setting where we had a "leveling-off" of what to expect and what not.

The first night was full of fun and everyone enjoyed. Jay and Joe (na mas kilala bilang B1 at B2) ay nagpakita ng kakaibang gilas at galing as they facilitated the activities for the night.

Sa second day naman Ü Nagkaroon ng apat na educational na talakayan! At ang mga paksa ay:

1.Education Situation in Mindanao. This talk was given to us by Mr. Camino Montessa, the Undersecretary of the Department of Education--Mindanao. He presented many valuable information including the statistics of students passing the standard qualifications for math, english and science. And the numbers were quite depsressing. Pero kahit nga depressing ang ipinakita ni Sir Montessa, lalo namang mas naging masigasig ang mga volunteers na ipagpatuloy ang kani-kanilang mga plans for their youth group.

2.Importance of Pathways. By Ms. Ira Lou Tamis of the National Pathways Office. She talked to us about the developments that have been happening in the whole Pathways to Higher Education organization. Kasama na dito ang ating mga bago at upcoming activities: tulad ng ating Christmas Activities, ang ating itinataguyod na advocacy na EDUC8 to LIBER8!, at ang mga bagong goals na napag-usapan sa katatapos na Strat Plan ng lahat ng Pathways Staff. If this all sounds boring to you, what happened during her talk definitely was not! Maraming palaro si Ate Ira (kahit ang mga Moderators, kasali!) at siyempre, may prizes! :D

3.Team-Building. By Ms. Clarisa Cuares of the XU Student Affairs office. Ang 63 na participants ay hinati sa 8 grupo. Each teams had tasks to do... And at the end of the activity, they had experienced first-hand the principles/aspects that are necessary in building a team. Sobrang napagod kaming lahat sa activity na ito pero sobrang enjoy din! Full of action kasi ang mga activities sa bahaging ito. (Iyong tipong lulusot sa hulahoop with out any body part touching the hoop.)

4. Fundraising. by Ms. Solvie Nubla, Pathways' Boss #2 and Queen :D In this part of the day, the participants gained new insights in how they should do their fundraising for their youth group. Ate Solvie enumerated many guidelines as to how we should their solicitation letters, how to get sponsorships, etc. Maraming natutunan ang volunteers, (at sa totoo lang, pati ang ibang staff hehe)!

Nagkaroon din ng pagkakataon ang mga volunteers na i-present ang kanilang mga plano at ginagawa sa kanilang youth group sa kasalukuyan. So far, lahat ng mga grupong ito ay magsisimula na ng kanilang tutorials by the second semester. Ang iba ay nakapagsimula na, tulad ng XU at NDMU.

Nag-enjoy din ang lahat sa Cultural Night na ginanap sa gabi ng second day. Hinarana ang lahat ng mga awitin ng ADZU at UC, sumayaw ang XU at ipinakita ang kanilang groove, cultural heritage naman ang ipinakita ng HCDC at NDMU, isang makabagbag-damdaming skit ang inihatid ng ADDU, at isang malupit na synchronized dance ang ipinamalas ng NDTC. At syempre, nagpresent din ang staff...Ang ganda ng presentation namin! Gusto niyo ng sample joke from our presentation? Sinong Pathways Volunteer ang binbuo? eh di si FASL! haha...

Ang mga participants ay halatang HINDI PREPARED Ü Nagdala lang naman cla ng mga props at costumes, synchronized ang mga sayaw nila, may script ang kanilang mga skit, halatang walang practice! Ü (sana gets niyo ang sarcasm) Imagine they brought with them props, kahit that they had to travel 6-8 hours from their hometowns! Special mention sa Holy Cross of Davao College at Notre Dame of Tacurong College na talaga naman nahirapan kaming i-break ang tie. Silang dalawa ang best presentations of the night!

Third and last day:

Volunteerismby Fr. Jett Villarin SJ, XU President. Ang galing ni Father! He spoke of Volunteerism—the whole spectrum of it, its significance, nature and the possibility of facing inequality while doing volunteer work. I'm sure the the talk of Fr. Jett had somehow encouraged the kids to render more service despite the negative experience(s) they had encountered or may encounter (e.g., experience with the DepEd and other LGUs, denial by sponsors, etc). We also had a Kumustahan session, in which representatives from each school recommitted themselves to the cause of Pathways. Special mention sa mga moderators who said truly that they will help their students in making their Pathways Youth Group work.
